Upon Watching Babel
It's movie with four different in which four different stories occur. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchet take a vacation to Morrocco, ostensibly to patch up their marriage after their youngest dies of SIDS. Pitt and Blanchet's Mexican nanny takes the kids to Tiajuana for a wedding. A deaf-mute Japanese girl tries hard to lose her virginity. Two Morroccan goat herders inherit a rifle, and when one of their bullets goes astray all hell breaks loose. The thing that links these disparate plots together is the rifle. I'm sure the plots are also thematically linked, I'm just not sure how. Probably something to do with communication, relation, and isolation, hence the title Babel, refering to the mythical tower that crumbled after God made all the buiders speak different languages thereby making it impossible for them to communicate with one another. Interesting choice casting Pitt and Blanchet. I'm not buying them as a married couple, not even a disfunctional one. While their names do bring star power to the marquee, I think the roles might have been better served with less glamourous actors.
