take a big risk

In Rory's truck we drove to 7-11 where I bought a Hostess cherry pie which, according to the ingredients, is cooked in beef fat. I've been on the look out for new music lately because my CD collection has not much changed since High School. So when Rory played for me Mogwai on our trip to 7-11, I was intrigued. Because there are no good record stores on the east side, at least not where I live, I was force to go to Borders to do my shopping. They did not have Okkervil River. They did not have Ted Leo. They did have Mogwai. Mogwai has several albums. I was not sure which one to buy, so I considered two things: the price and the year it was released. I bought the most recent one which was also the cheapest. I also bought Cibo Matto and Billy Bragg & Wilco because they were in the bargain bin. It was not until I returned home that I realized the Mogwai CD I bought was not in fact a Mogwai CD, but a CD by some band called Moan. I was so focused on price and date in neglected to account for the artist. I am a cautious consumer. Buying a CD from a band I've never heard of is not a risk I would normally take. I'm listening to the CD as I am writing this. The band is an electronic pop duo from Portland, Oregon. From the track listing, this CD is ostensibly a concept album, having to do with a game or a race or something. I'm not paying much attention to the lyrics. The songs are simultaniously catchy and irritating.
