So the other day, Eli was telling me about his mission to make a list of every movie he's ever seen. As far as he is aware, his list is complete and stands at somewhere around 2,500 movies. I thought this was an interesting exercise, so, of course, I imitated. Working backward from the present with the help of imdb, I scrolled through a list of every movie released in a year that had received at least a thousand votes from users, so the list as you see it is in the order of positive feedback from the faceless masses of the internent. There were a handful of movies that I'd seen that had not received 1000 votes (such as How to Draw a Bunny, which was excellent), so I stuck those at the bottom of their respective years.
As I was putting this together, I was really amazed at the sheer volume of films I'd seen, especially in the theater. What also surprised me was the types of movies I've seen. The mainstream big-budget action fare is over-represented, especially if you take into account what I consider "my taste" and the fact that I think of myself as a person who loves cinema (shamefully, I allowed another SIFF to elapse without attending a single film). Writing this list has made me realize either I don't exercise very much autonomy over the movies I choose to see because I'm in a relationship and I must take into account the taste of others when selecting a movie to watch (I can't remember the last time I watched a film by myself). Anyways, I make a promise to myself to be more selective in the future.
